14TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
Go.
The apostles had spent months traveling with Jesus and learning from him. Jesus had explained parables and answered their questions. He even performed miracles right in front of their eyes. It was all so wonderful, but now he was sending them out to heal the sick and proclaim the kingdom of God themselves. Imagine their swirling thoughts. How could they go without him? What would they do or say?
What would you do? Remember, you are also a disciple of Jesus. And since you are his follower, he is sending you out just as he sent out the Twelve. This might make your own thoughts swirl: “What would I even say? Could Jesus work through me?” Put your thoughts to rest and trust that Jesus knows you. He has empowered you through your baptism. By his word and the sacraments, he has been deepening your faith in him. He has been preparing you each day.
As Jesus gathered his apostles and gave them authority, he helped them see that they were not going out on their own power. He would be working through them. You, too, have received his light, his words, and his authority. And that means that Jesus promises to give you the words you will need (Matthew 10:19-20). It means that as you pray for people, it will be Jesus’ own healing presence that will touch those in need.
Take a moment now to imagine that Jesus is sending you out. Let him know how you are feeling. Tell him if you feel ill-equipped. Tell him if you feel reluctant to take the first step and if you are anxious about being rejected. Bring it all to him. Then listen to what he might say to you. He might remind you of a particular Scripture: My light is in you. Don’t keep it hidden (Matthew 5:16). You are mine (Isaiah 43:1). He might bring to your mind a time when he blessed you with peace or healing. He might convince you that he is with you.
So don’t be afraid when an opportunity to share your faith arises. Remember that Jesus has called you, just as he called the Twelve, to proclaim God’s kingdom in your midst. He has given you a share in his own authority. Take courage and go!
